We have published a set of national pollutant surfaces covering methane, tropospheric nitrogen dioxide and fine particulate matter. Each pollutant is mapped for two years so the change between them can be read directly from the pair. The plates are on our Our Works page.
Three pollutants, three different stories
Methane rises out of the humid south into a broad elevated band across the middle belt and north-east, and every class break shifted upward between 2020 and 2025.
Nitrogen dioxide traces combustion, so it reads as a map of economic activity: sharp maxima over Lagos and Ogun, Abuja, Kano and the Port Harcourt corridor, against a near-clean Sahel background.
Fine particulate matter follows the harmattan dust regime rather than the cities, with a pronounced maximum across Katsina, Kano, Jigawa, Bauchi and northern Kaduna that grew both higher and wider by 2022.
Using the atlas
The surfaces are resolved below state level, which makes them usable for baseline studies, environmental impact assessment, public health screening and siting decisions. We can produce the same analysis for a specific state, city or facility footprint, at a finer resolution and for the years you need.
